Denver Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta

Our all-chapter event this month is a 2-for-1 bonanza! After a short business meeting to elect 2022 officers, attendees will hear from a very special inspirational speaker.

Tonya Quinn, Beta Gamma/Colorado State, is Founder and CEO of The Kindness Empire, a Denver-based online gift-giving enterprise that unites talented artisans, beautifully handcrafted items, and people who care deeply about the environment and community. The Kindness Empire offers themed gift packages designed to touch the heart of each recipient, conveying such sentiments as Comfort, Love, Joy, Gratitude, or Kindness. A portion of profits from The Kindness Empire’s sales support art curriculum for children in schools where there is no art instruction. Connecting children to themselves and the earth is at the heart of The Kindness Empire’s art curriculum, “How to be an Artist.”

Light appetizers and champagne cocktails will be served. Cost is $5 for dues-paying members, $10 for non-members, payable via Venmo (type November Program in the memo line) or via check or cash at the event. A virtual option will be available for those who prefer to participate virtually (at no cost).

RSVP via Evite. Contact VP Programming Joanna Kadis with questions.

Every October, Thetas participate in group service projects to honor Founder Bettie Locke Hamilton’s October birthday. Our chapter offers multiple opportunities for you to help out and advance the mission of a local organization.

For Newborns in Need, we will volunteer by knitting or crocheting caps that will go into bags of donated items for babies born at Denver Health General Hospital. Lessons will be provided via Zoom, and then we will work on our items together until the event ends. Because this is a virtual event, no social distancing is necessary; you will tune in to the live info session via Zoom from the comfort of your home.

RSVP via Evite. Contact Carolyn Ferreira with questions. All Day of Service updates will be communicated via Evite. Note: For security reasons, Zoom meeting information will be available via Evite only.

For a simple, healthy, and economical lunch, nothing beats a salad. Building a salad in an empty mason jar helps ensure that leafy greens, colorful veggies, and tasty add-ons can store easily and travel well. The finished product also promises a wonderfully nutritious and pretty-to-eat meal. Just top off the salad with your favorite zesty dressing and crispy croutons or crunchy nuts, and dig in.

Nutritional expert and Theta sister Leigh Miller, Gamma Upsilon/Miami, will teach us how to assemble Salad in a Jar meals by layering various ingredients packed with protein, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and eye appeal. We’ll each build three salads to take home using a variety of fresh foods and pantry staples. Making salad in a jar is a perfect way to use up leftovers and recycle old mason jars, plus a fun and convenient way to have a variety of small, balanced meals ready to eat at a moment’s notice. What a fantastic way to add colorful zing to your midday meal!

What to bring:
-  3 mason jars with lids and rings
-  3 ingredients to share (1-2 cups each)
Examples: tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, onions, radishes, beets, peppers (red, green, yellow, banana), olives, artichoke hearts, cheeses, beans, seeds, dried fruit, berries, quinoa, ham, turkey, bacon, hard-boiled eggs

Snacks and beverages will be provided. Cost is $5, payable via Venmo (include "Salad in a Jar" in the memo line) or via check or cash at the event.

How do you prepare your carefully tended lawn and landscaping for the Colorado winter? Attend this informative session to find out!

Master Gardener and Theta sister Lucinda Greene, Phi deuteron/Stanford, will walk us through the various steps to “put the garden to bed” in preparation for colder weather. Some steps may be easier than you think... and you might discover some surprising things too. Definitely, you will walk away with information you can use to prepare your plants, shrubs, trees, lawn, and other landscape features for the change of seasons.
